Dorset councils to share environmental health platform

Partnership procures cloud based system for collection of related functions

A group of Dorset local authorities are preparing to use a shared cloud platform for managing their environmental health services.

The Dorset Councils Partnership, comprising Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, West Dorset District Council and North Dorset District Council, together with Purbeck District Council, have carried out a joint procurement that led to a deal with local government software provider Tascomi to use its Tascomi Public Protection system.

It is fully hosted in the UK, with ISO 27001 accreditation for secure storage of the relevant data.

A spokesperson for Tascomi said the councils are at the planning stage of implementation but expect to have the system up and running within six months.

It covers food safety, health and safety, public protection, environmental quality, housing improvement and licensing. The councils reportedly examined the options for procuring a collection of systems for each, but decided that one delivering all the functions would serve their purposes better.

The software places no restrictions on the number of councils using a single database, but with secure separation of the data, and can be used to optimise the assets, time and resources of all those involved.

The move reflects the continuing pressure on local authorities to look for savings through joint procurements, with cloud based systems offering a route to reducing costs.
