West Mercia Police working with Telford and Wrekin Council to find source of ‘malicious communication’
Public digital signage in Telford has been the subject of “malicious communication,” having been photographed displaying pornographic content rather than the local information it was designed to display.
The council signboard is located at the multi-million pound Southwater development, due for completion next year, housing bars and restaurants, as well as a new state-of the-art library and council offices.
A council spokesperson said: "We are carrying out a full investigation into this complaint and have referred it to West Mercia Police and the cyber-crime desk. Immediately the issue was raised with us we disabled internet connectivity to all totems in Southwater, which were displaying correct content at the time."
West Mercia Police provided this statement from Inspector Paul Mathison: “We were made aware of an incident of malicious communication involving a Telford & Wrekin Council external digital display board.
“We are awaiting an update from a council’s internal investigation into the cause of the incident. Should this relate to any criminal activity, then a thorough investigation will be undertaken by West Mercia Police.”
The picture of the board displaying the adult content was initially shared with local news website Telford Live and was then picked up by BBC news.
