Barts Health NHS Trust says it is investigating evidence of cyber attack

A London hospital trust has confirmed that it has had to shut down some IT systems after a cyber attack today.

Barts Health NHS Trust said it has become aware of an attack and was urgently investigating the matter.

Details of the affected systems are still unclear, but the trust said in a statement that they do not include the Cerner Millenium patient administration software or the clinical system used for radiology.

A spokesperson told UKAuthority that it was necessary to take some systems offline to minimise the risk.

"We are urgently investigating this matter and have taken a number of drives offline as a precautionary measure," the spokesperson said. "We have tried and tested contingency plans in place and are making every effort to ensure that patient care will not be affected."

She added that, despite earlier reports, it had not been a ransomware attack.

Public sector concerns over ransomware were heightened last year when Lincolnshire County Council had to close down IT systems for six days after being infected with the rogue software.
