Fujitsu signs Armed Forces Corporate Covenant

ICT systems, services and products company Fujitsu UK & Ireland has announced it has signed the Ministry of Defence Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. The Armed Forces Corporate Covenant provides a mechanism for communities to express support for members of the armed forces community and is designed to allow businesses and charitable organisations to express their support, and commit to ways in which they can provide that support. Fujitsu has already introduced a number of policies and initiatives to better support reserve personnel, veterans, and their families, including up to two week's paid leave a year to attend annual training; a leave policy and 'Your Choices' approach that support flexible leave requests from all employees combined with the fact that ex-Armed Forces employees can request up to a maximum period of two additional weeks unpaid leave for training; setting up a collaboration site for our ex-Armed Forces personnel and entitling them to use the Employee Assistance Programme services; work with the Career Transition Partnership, which assesses how recruitment gaps could be addressed by employing ex-Armed Forces personnel; and setting up a recruitment process that recognises Armed Forces skills and qualifications when interviewing for new positions.

Aligned Assets case studies on local authority use of business data

Gazetteer and address management solutions specialist Aligned Assets has published two case studies on the use of business data by local authorities to drive efficiencies and increase revenue. The first case study focuses on Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and its work on the government's business rates retention policy that sees councils now able to retain up to 50% of all business rates revenue they collect. In addition to a project that saw council departments sharing data more efficiently, the Aligned Assets business database was used by Barnsley to identify business premises that are potentially going unbilled for business rates. The case study shows that information provided exclusively from the business database has provided an annual revenue gain of about £15,000, with a total revenue gain of £70,000 including retrospective collection of previously owed charges. The second case study covers work by the London Borough of Harrow to help process the extremely high rate of change relating to business premises and names. Through the use of the Aligned Assets business database, the council saw an increase of 128% in the amount of validated business name entries, with an inferred saving of more than £25,000. Like Barnsley, Harrow will also be using the business database to aid in the detection of businesses unknown to, and therefore potentially unbilled by, their business rates team.
