IT industry association techUK has launched a study on the future of digital twin technology.
It said it is carrying out the Digital Twins of Everything and Everyone project in collaboration with Fujitsu, WHP Group and the University of Salford as part of its wider programme on the technology.
Digital twins are often used by public sector bodies to create simulations and run modelling in developing large scale projects. Examples have included the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority using the technology in planning its bus services and transport connectivity, and Birmingham City Council to support its efforts in achieving net zero carbon emissions.
techUK said the study will look at the future landscape and economic impact of digital twins and that the findings, which will include policy recommendations, are scheduled to be made public in early 2025.
“The work is intended to build on techUK’s 2021 report, Unlocking Value Across the Digital Twin Ecosystem, that set out how digital twins could be adopted to help the UK recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and recommendations for government intervention,” it said.
“This research will take the conversation further by showcasing how digital twins are reshaping industries, economies, and societies worldwide. It will provide a deep analysis of the landscape, roadmap, business models, and macroeconomic implications of these technologies.”
